Spring is here. No surprise. Happens every year. Happened before I was born and will happen long after I have passed. Change change and change once more. The Earth spins at 1,000 mph at the equator and orbiting at 66,000 mph and the next season is always full tilt upon us. “Time is a jet plane. It moves too fast.” as the man sung. Nothing lasts forever. Not winter, not the cold dark nights. Same goes for your own dark cold days and feelings and thoughts. And we all nod and go yes yes but of course. I KNOW THAT. TELL ME SOMETHING NEW.
Then how come then we don’t act on his blatantly obvious fact? Why do the blues seem so permanent when we are in them? Every previous episode has come to an end and less awful, even better, times have always followed. Yet we still cannot see this in the midst of our pain. All we can imagine is more hurt.
So it seems we might know this unconcealed truth at some annoyingly superficial level, but we can’t experience in a way that would allow us to act usefully on it. A deeper acceptance is needed. A closer more intimate observation of change would give us the freedom to see the new weather system on the horizon and the inherent ephemerality within our own moods emotions and mental health.
Just imagine being able to live amongst this deep-seated understanding of our internal and external worlds. That experienced knowledge would bring such wisdom and joy that we couldn’t help but want to share it too.
It is so easy to do. To stop and feel the change, see the change, observe the change. There is our breath; in now out, short, now long, smooth now coarse. There is our body; warm in this part now cooler, aching over here, now easing. Here is our feeling; joyful now sad, bored now fascinated, unbearably sad now bearably so. We have the power to live more wisely right here.
